Allied Youth Collect Funds for Physical Therapy Needs

The members of the Allied Youth Post in Grand Falls-Windsor are doing their part to help children and teens receiving physiotherapy treatment. On Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 the AY group participated in the Annual Lions Club Santa Claus Parade in Grand Falls-Windsor where they collected donations for the Rehabilitative Services Department at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre. This year’s project which they raised $951 for was the purchase of Physical Therapy Mirrors.

Physical therapy mirrors are an important aid for rehab therapy and exercise providing patients, young and old, with visual feedback. Full length mirrors are frequently used in physiotherapy departments to make patients more aware of their static posture either in sitting or standing and their dynamic posture during movement. Mirrors are also employed in gait retraining, for example following the provision of a prosthesis after amputation. As well, because mirrors are a true reflection they can also be used by speech therapists as a speech teaching device. This equipment will ultimately benefit any young individual ranging from children recovering from surgery or a broken limb to child amputees.

The South and Central Health Foundation thanks the Allied Youth group for their dedicated and enthusiastic support of their local hospital.

Millcrest Academy Donates Entertainment Package to Pediatric Unit

The Millcrest Academy Student Safe School Committee decided they wanted to help make hospital stays more fun for young patients in Grand Falls-Windsor. The committee of 30 students and 3 teacher leaders got the whole school involved in raising money to buy an entertainment package for the Pediatric Unit at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre. They sold tickets on different prize packages over several months and raised $550. Out of the funds they purchased a DS game system, carrying case and four games as well as a portable DVD player and six movies. The students invited Foundation Development Officer Wendy Houlihan to a school assembly in May to present her with the entertainment package.
