2011 Radiothon Raises Over $39,000 !

Last year's South and Central Health Foundation Mother's Day Radiothon kicked off fundraising to purchase remarkable technology that is available for patients in many Emergency Departments all across Canada. This lifesaving technology is a Portable Ultrasound Unit. Thanks to donors, we raised $39,000 to help support the purchase of this $62,000 piece of modern equipment.

A portable ultrasound unit can be used to help expectant moms who come to the ER in crisis. It will help patients who need emergency assistance for chest pains, blood clots, stomach blockages, collapsed lungs and a great deal more. It can identify and locate a foreign body, which might eliminate the need to expose the patient to an x-ray or a trip to the operating room. With this equipment, first responders will have access to a very clear image of many of the issues faced by patients in emergency rooms.

Time is critical in an emergency situation. Every moment can literally make the difference between life and death. With this ultrasound technology physicians can quickly assess a patient with a high resolution scanner to provide a more thorough patient diagnosis in just minutes - and ultimately save lives through immediate intervention.

Unfortunately this technology was not available to help patients served in the Emergency Department of the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Centre in the past.

The good news is that the South and Central Health Foundation, by working with donors, has successfully been able to raise the funds to bring a Portable Ultrasound Unit to patients who find themselves in need of emergency assistance. The South and Central Health Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the healthcare programs and services offered by our Regional Health Authority. Our charity wants to ensure that every aspect of the care experienced by patients is the best that it can possibly be.
